# Diff

Two honest comparisons: generation gap and renderer choice, with trade-offs stated.

## Facts (2026-10-13)

- **Scope:** Generation gap; renderer choice
- **Style:** Trade-offs stated, no strawmen
- **Basis:** Reference rig, same method
- **Use:** Read before arguing online

## The two pages here

[PS4 generation vs PS5](/diff/ps5-emulator-vs-ps4) explains why PS4 tooling and expectations do not transfer: different CPU floor, different GPU model, different firmware contract.

[Why Vulkan](/diff/why-vulkan) argues the renderer commitment: explicit pipelines, RDNA2 mapping, and no fallback to maintain.

Both assume the free build from [Download Meridian](/download), official firmware, and owned dumps — 400+ titles indexed.

## Reading rule

- Comparisons describe method differences, not quality rankings.

- Every claim cites a Reference page. Uncited claims are not claims.

- Ratings still come from [Compat](/compat), never from comparisons.

## FAQ

### Is Meridian better than PS4 emulators?

Different generation, different problem. Read the generation page before comparing ratings across consoles.

### Why only Vulkan?

One explicit renderer done well beats three maintained poorly. See [Why Vulkan](/diff/why-vulkan).

### Do comparisons change ratings?

No. Ratings come from runs on the reference rig under [Compatibility methodology](/log/compatibility-methodology).
